Amazon's Android App Store Set to Close: What Users Need to Know

Instructions

The e-commerce giant Amazon has made a significant announcement that will impact millions of Android users. By August 20, 2025, the company plans to discontinue its app store for Android devices. This decision means that any applications and games downloaded via this platform may no longer function as intended after the shutdown. The transition is expected to affect a wide range of users who have built up substantial libraries of mobile content through Amazon's offerings over the years.

In preparation for this change, Amazon has already halted the sale of Amazon Coins, a virtual currency used for in-app purchases and buying apps within the store. As of February 20, 2025, customers can no longer purchase these coins, but they can still use any remaining balance until the final closure date. After August 20, refunds will be provided for any unused Amazon Coins. The company promises more detailed information on the refund process will be released at a later time. Notably, Fire TV and Fire Tablet users will continue to enjoy access to the app store, as this shutdown only affects the Android version.

This move by Amazon reflects a shift in the company's strategy, moving away from promoting its app store as heavily as it did during the 2010s. Back then, Amazon frequently offered free apps to attract users, similar to current promotions seen with platforms like the Epic Games Store. Gamers who accumulated a large collection of mobile games through Amazon's app store might now face challenges in preserving their digital assets. While users are advised to download their purchased or claimed apps before the shutdown, there's no guarantee that all content will work seamlessly afterward. Nonetheless, this transition presents an opportunity for users to explore alternative platforms and discover new ways to engage with their favorite apps and games.
