Cubo Design Architect Creates a Luminous Waterside Residence

Instructions

Cubo Design Architect's '10M' project redefines waterside living in eastern Japan, crafting a home where a 65-foot swimming pool acts as the central orchestrator of light and atmosphere. This residence, nestled within a landscape of bamboo groves and citrus orchards, offers a serene environment deeply integrated with its natural surroundings.

Embracing the Essence of Water: A Luminous Architectural Statement

The Coastal Canvas: Integrating Nature's Bounty

Nestled along the eastern Japanese coast, where the fragrance of salt mingles with the aroma of bamboo and tangerine trees that gently descend towards the Pacific Ocean, Cubo Design Architect envisioned "10M." This distinctive residence is conceived as an organic extension of its 56,000-square-foot, subtly sloping terrain. The entire architectural blueprint pivots around a remarkable 65-foot swimming pool, which transcends its conventional role as a recreational feature to become a dynamic source of luminosity, rhythmic vitality, and an immersive atmospheric quality.

The Aquatic Core: A Symphony of Light and Form

The swimming pool serves as the fundamental structural axis of the dwelling, intentionally aligned with the adjacent citrus grove to the south. From this pivotal water feature, the entire architectural narrative unfolds, ensuring that water remains the paramount focal point of the home. The sun's rays, fragmented and refracted by the pool's surface, cast an enchanting shimmer that permeates every interior space, creating a constant, ethereal dance of light.

Sukiya-Zukuri Principles: A Journey of Sensory Discovery

The architects meticulously orchestrated the spatial progression, drawing profound inspiration from Sukiya-zukuri architecture—a refined aesthetic tradition rooted in Japanese tea ceremony environments. The entry experience is a masterclass in compression and expansion: a narrow, almost cave-like approach tunnel gradually transitions into a subtly lit gallery. From this contemplative space, expansive doors dramatically open to reveal the luminous grandeur of the pool-facing vista. This deliberate manipulation of visual perception compels the observer to adjust their gaze, thereby intensifying the perceived brilliance of the light through carefully controlled contrasts.

The Tea Room: A Pinnacle of Refined Aesthetics

The integrated tea room epitomizes this commitment to material and atmospheric precision, serving as the dwelling's contemplative culmination. It thoughtfully frames picturesque views of the nearby bamboo grove, while gracefully incorporating traditional elements. Bark-wrapped columns, natural plaster finishes, and compositional cues derived from the 16th-century tea master Sen no Rikyū are reinterpreted with contemporary sensibility, reflecting the architects' unique vision.

Minimalist Elegance: Amplifying Environmental Awareness

The meticulously curated minimalist palette and restrained detailing function as a form of perceptual training, sharpening an appreciation for the subtle environmental shifts that might otherwise be overlooked amidst more elaborate finishes. The gentle rustle of wind through bamboo, the delicate ripples on the water's surface, the melodic calls of birds, and the distant murmur of the ocean are elevated to primary sensory experiences, rather than mere background elements. Essential functional spaces, such as wine storage, guest accommodations, and a fitness area, are thoughtfully integrated with equal economy, always serving the overarching atmospheric narrative of the residence.
