Vacheron Constantin Unveils Inaugural Global Watchmaking Competition

Instructions

Vacheron Constantin is pioneering a unique venture in the horological world, launching a global watch competition that draws parallels with prestigious automotive elegance contests. This innovative initiative, dubbed the Concours d'Élégance Horlogère, is a collaboration with Phillips and Bacs & Russo, and aims to celebrate the rich heritage and intricate craftsmanship of Vacheron Constantin timepieces.

The competition is structured to honor both vintage and modern examples of haute horlogerie, offering seven distinct award categories. Enthusiasts and collectors are invited to present Vacheron Constantin pocket watches or wristwatches manufactured between 1755 and 1999. Certain exclusions apply, such as quartz watches, clocks, and pieces with significant modifications. The diverse categories range from timepieces with chiming mechanisms and chronographs to astronomical complications, multiple complications, and those under the prestigious Chronomètre Royal designation. Special attention is also given to métiers d’art and design-focused watches, which showcase the brand's distinctive aesthetic choices.

Timepieces will undergo a rigorous evaluation based on nine specific criteria: authenticity, aesthetic appeal, rarity, influence on Vacheron Constantin's history or general watchmaking, verifiable origin, technical excellence, artistic craftsmanship, condition, and emotional resonance. Each entry can only be considered for one category, necessitating careful selection by participants. A distinguished panel of international experts, including renowned watch historian Nicholas Foulkes and Urwerk co-founder Felix Baumgartner, will judge the entries. The jury will be co-chaired by watch specialist Aurel Bacs and Christian Selmoni, Vacheron Constantin’s director of heritage and style. Submissions open on January 19 and conclude on April 30, with winners to be announced on November 10, coinciding with Phillips and Bacs & Russo’s fall auctions.

This competition represents a significant milestone, fostering a deeper appreciation for the artistry and engineering behind Vacheron Constantin's creations. It not only provides a platform for collectors to showcase their cherished pieces but also encourages scholarly discourse and the discovery of horological masterpieces. Such events illuminate the enduring legacy of fine watchmaking, inspiring future generations to pursue excellence and innovation in this intricate craft.
